Sciensus cancer care nurses

Sciensus cancer care nurses offer the same level of professional treatment at home that you would expect in a hospital. Highly trained, they deliver a personalised service to every patient which means they can ensure everyone receives the best care. Available day or night, you can always speak to one of our nurses with any concerns.

Sciensus cancer care nursing at home

Exceptional cancer care is something everyone should expect, including those receiving treatment at home. Our team of experienced and specialised cancer care nurses bring compassionate treatment directly to patients in the comfort of their own home. Doing so reduces the stress of travelling to and from hospital, allowing patients to focus on recovery.

Our nurses undergo regular training courses and have years of experience in hospitals and the community administering a wide range of cancer treatments. They can assess individual needs, offering a tailored treatment to suit all patients.

Sciensus’ nursing team

During your journey with Sciensus you will have access to an expert team of nurses who you can talk to about your treatment. Some will visit you regularly at home, while others are available on the phone.

Chemotherapy nurses

Our nurses are experienced in delivering chemotherapy and immunotherapy at home. This is the same treatment you would expect in a hospital. Cancer nurses at home can answer any of your questions to put your mind at ease.

Clinical pathway nurses

It’s important to patients to understand their treatment and how it will be planned out. This is called a journey. To ensure all aspects of a patient’s treatment links together, we have dedicated clinical pathway nurses to keep everything on track, and patients have access to them over the phone.

Specialist homecare nurses

Patients receiving care at home also require a range of non-chemo treatments. We have a team of home nurses for cancer patients who provide care such as blood tests and blood pressure checks.

Clinical nurse specialists

Our clinical nurse specialists are here to help patients get the most out of their cancer treatment. They can support you and your family with a wide range of emotional, psychological, physical and financial needs.

Care bureau nurse advisor

Sciensus offers all patients a 24/7 phone line where they can speak to one of our nurses. They are there to help with any queries or concerns about your treatment.

What to expect from cancer nursing at home

Before starting any treatment, your Sciensus nurse will talk with you to make sure you understand and consent to your proposed care plan. You can withdraw consent at any time, and the nurse will communicate your decisions to your doctor. Having a private cancer nurse at home means patients can have these discussions in a relaxed and familiar environment.

Clinical visits are scheduled through an automated system so you will receive confirmation of your appointment time either via a call or text message the evening before the visit. Should you prefer to receive treatment at an alternative location, we will work to make this happen. However, please discuss this with your nurse at least seven days’ before your treatment is due so we can assess the location’s suitability.

Maintaining a clean environment at home is crucial when receiving treatment. Your nurse will need access to a clean sink area for handwashing and a tidy space to prepare your treatment. Hand hygiene is important, with nurses using soap, paper towels and occasionally alcohol rubs to prevent infections. Please make sure that children are supervised by another adult and that any pets are taken out the room during your treatment.

Our specialist homecare nurses for cancer patients can perform a range of treatments depending on the patient’s needs. These include:

  • Cannulation or central venous access devices for treatments requiring intravenous access
  • Injections, including subcutaneous or intramuscular injections.

Should you wish to eat or drink during your treatment, please speak to your nurse first. There may be dietary restrictions in place related to your treatment. Treatments may last a long time so if you are going to eat, it’s a good idea to choose types which are easily eaten, like a sandwich. If your treatment is long, you might want to have a book ready, or make sure your phone or tablet is fully charged.
